Future Library

Future Library is an art project that none of us are likely to experience in its completion. Created by Scottish artist Katie Paterson, Future Library evolves over the course of one hundred years.

Our challenge was to create a digital representation of this living, breathing, and continuously unfolding artwork.

We wanted to give the visitors of futurelibrary.no a chance to grasp the awe-inspiring depth of Katie Paterson's artwork, and to deliver a tangible vision of the 100 years that the artwork will unfold over - both the years that already passed by, and the many - still empty - years laying in front of us.

The concept of time can be hard to grasp so we took the tree rings, a strong metaphor that combines both the essence of time and growth - and used them as the center piece of the site. Each tree ring represents one year and one author, and the user can navigate through the rings of time to explore the different authors that contributed to the artwork thus far.

The Future Library artwork isn’t easily accessible to everyone, so we wanted to make sure that people get a glimpse of what the forest looks and feels like, and get immersed in the experience. As time passes, the trees on the site grow - just as the real forest in Nordmarka - and the sounds of the forest become more pronounced.
